Deck Painting in New Jersey

Why Paint My Deck?

Paint has two purposes: to beautify and to protect. When you paint your deck, you keep it looking fresh and new, adding value and attractiveness to your home. But paint also provides a barrier against the weather, so that water doesn't cause rotting and sunshine doesn't create splitting. Paint can also help keep wood-destroying insects at bay.

Should I Paint or Stain My Deck?

Generally, this is a matter of personal preference. Look at some examples of each, and decide which one you like better. The main advantages of deck staining are generally these:

  • A more natural wood color
  • Wood grain shows through
  • Stain soaks into the wood, rather than resting on its surface.

However, many people prefer paint because the colors can be chosen to match or coordinate with the house colors. Additionally, paint has more hiding power to cover up flaws or repaired damage.

A final consideration is that it's difficult to go from paint to stain. Once wood has been painted, it is a complicated process to get the paint removed thoroughly enough to stain the wood attractively. So if your deck has never been painted, keep this fact in mind.

How Often Should I Get My Deck Painted?

We always recommend that exterior painting be performed before the current paint coating has begun to fail. If the paint is already failing, it takes a lot of effort (and/or cost) to remove the failing paint and then re-prime the wood. Here in the New Jersey area, coastal weather can cause deck paint to wear more quickly than it might if you are farther inland. In general, you can plan on your exterior paint lasting a minimum of 5 years, though it can sometimes last 8 or even 10 years. It depends on a variety of factors, including:

  • Sun and rain exposure
  • Quality of the paint
  • How much the deck is used
  • Whether previous coats of paint were applied well

One of the best ways to keep your deck in the best possible shape is to have it power-washed each year. This removes dirt, mold, and mildew, so the surface always looks great. Another advantage is that the power-washing crew can inspect the condition of your paint and let you know if the deck needs to be repainted.
