Choosing an Interior Paint Finish

Finding that perfect color of paint for your home can be a big process. From settling on a color family to picking swatches and testing samples in your room, there are plenty of steps between deciding to refresh a room with a new coat of paint and the actual painting. One of the last decisions you will make in the process though is what level of sheen you want on your walls.
What is Paint Sheen?
Simply put your paint’s finish, or sheen, is the level of shine your paint has once dried. Starting at the lowest level of sheen is flat paint which has no shine to it whatsoever. High-gloss paint has the greatest level of sheen, and in between those two there is a range of options.
To help you understand the breakdown of paint sheens and what areas inside your home they are most appropriate for here is a list of the most popular paint finishes and what spaces in your home they are best suited for:
Flat - This is chalky paint finish has no shine whatsoever. It goes on easily and hides imperfections beautifully but is difficult to clean. Flat paint should be reserved for ceilings or walls that won’t be touched often. One exception to this is with certain specially formulated flat paints that are designed to be exceptionally scrubbable.
Eggshell - This paint finish has just a touch of shine to it and is easier to wipe clean than flat. Eggshell is a good option for hallways, dining rooms, and spaces that won’t require frequent wipe downs.
Semi-gloss - With a noticeable shine under natural or artificial light, this paint finish can handle heavy use, and clean up is a breeze. Good for kid’s rooms, kitchens, and high-use rooms.
Satin - This paint has a beautiful, pearl finish that is very similar to that of semi-gloss. It holds up well to heavy use and is highly resistant to mildew. Use it in mudrooms or kids’ rooms.
High-gloss - At the highest level of shine is high-gloss paint. This finish will show off your paint color like none other and is incredibly resilient. The only drawback to it is the way its reflective nature highlights every imperfection on your walls, so save this for trim work or walls in excellent condition!
